Why I Retired My Oil Fryers and Switched to Air Fryers

I own four fryers—two traditional oil fryers and two air fryers. For years, I was all about deep-frying. But after a bad accident and significant weight gain, I realized I needed to make a change. That meant saying goodbye to my oil fryers and finding a healthier way to cook.

My First Air Fryer: Budget-Friendly & Reliable

The first air fryer I bought was Gourmia, back when air frying was still relatively new. I wasn’t sure if I’d even like it, so I went with one of the least expensive models—yet, to my surprise, it’s still one of the highest-rated air fryers according to Consumer Reports.

It may not be the flashiest or most modern-looking air fryer, but I care about functionality over aesthetics. Plus, when I’m done using it, it goes right into the cupboard—so looks don’t matter much anyway.

✔ Extra-large 7-quart capacity – Easily fits a 5-pound whole chicken.
✔ Best for French fries – Ranked as #1 for crispy fries.
✔ Simple & reliable – No unnecessary gimmicks, just solid performance.

The Ninja Air Fryer: Best for Cooking Two Things at Once

Later, I upgraded to the Ninja Foodi. This one looks sleek and modern and was more expensive—but does that make it better? Not necessarily.

While my first air fryer is huge and great for big meals, the Ninja has two separate baskets, making it perfect for cooking two things at once. Want to make chicken and fries at the same time? This fryer makes it easy.

✔ Dual compartments – Cook two different foods at once (like wings & fries).
✔ Perfect for game days – Ideal for making appetizers like mozzarella sticks, wings, and fries at the same time.
✔ More stylish design – Looks great on the counter.

Which Air Fryer Do I Use the Most?

Even though I own both, my go-to air fryer is still my first one. It’s a little smaller and easier to move around, and since I usually only need to cook one thing at a time, it’s the one I grab most often. If anything ever happens to it, I’ll immediately buy another one.

That said, the Ninja really shines when you’re cooking for guests or need to make multiple things at once. If you ever host Football Sundays or get-togethers, having an air fryer with two baskets is a game-changer.

Final Thoughts: Which One Should You Get?

If you want the best overall performance, extra-large 7-quart capacity, and top-tier fries, go with Gourmia.

But if you love the idea of cooking two foods at once, the Ninja Foodi is worth considering.

Both of these air fryers have a permanent place in my kitchen, and I’d recommend either one depending on how you cook.
